The EMD F7 was a 1,500 horsepower (1,100 kW) Diesel-electric locomotive produced between February 1949 and December 1953 by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors (EMD) and General Motors Diesel (GMD).

Although originally promoted by EMD as a freight-hauling unit, the F7 was also used in passenger service hauling such trains as the Santa Fe Railways Super Chief and El Capitan.

The F7 was the fourth model in GM-EMDs successful line of F unit locomotives, and by far the best-selling cab unit of all time. In fact, more F7s were built than all other F units combined. It succeeded the F3 model in GM-EMDs F unit sequence, and was replaced in turn by the F9. Final assembly was at GM-EMDs La Grange, Illinois plant or GMDs London, Ontario facility.

The F7 differed from the F3 primarily in internal equipment (mostly electrical) and some external features. Its continuous tractive effort rating was 20% higher (e.g. 40,000 lb (18,000 kg) for an F7 with 65 mph (105 km/h) gearing, compared to 32,500 lb (14,700 kg) for an F3 with the same gearing.) A total of 2,366 cab-equipped lead A units and 1,483 cabless-booster or B units were built. Many F7s remained in service for decades, as railroads found them economical to operate and maintain.

DC ANALOG SYSTEMS
DC Analog is a control system standard to most starter sets which allows the user to control the track (and not the locomotive). This means that two or more trains on the same track will move, speed up, slow down and stop at the same time.
DCC DIGTIAL SYSTEMS
DCC Digital stands for ‘Digital Command Control’. DCC Digital systems allow individual locomotives and accessories to be independently controlled from the controller. Other functions, such as lighting and sound (if equipped), can also be independently controlled.

DCC READY (Standard DC)

This means the locomotive, train set or equipment is fitted with a socket that is ready to accept a DCC decoder.  The most common and readily available types of decoders here in the US are: 6 pin, 8 pin, next 18, and 21 pin.  Prior to buying a  decoder for your locomotive, verify which of the previous you will need.  This information is usually found on the manufacturers site or instruction booklet.

The locomotive requires a DCC decoder to be fitted to the socket in order for it to work on a DCC controlled layout. It can however still be used on the conventional DC (analog) layout. 

 

DCC EQUIPPED

This indicates that the locomotive, train set or equipment is fitted with a decoder that has been pre-installed at the factory. 

This means that the locomotive is ready to run and operate on a DCC controlled layout and can now be called up by request from a Digital Controller. Additional features, such as lighting and sound (if equipped), can also be independently controlled (only if the locomotive is fitted with these accessories).

Some DCC equipped locomotives can also be run on DC layouts (see note below). Some accessories may continue to work automatically, such as lighting and sound (if equipped), however, the user will not have independent control of these under DC operation. It is important to note that manufacturer's decoders who support sound playback on DC operation will only provide a selection of sounds when the locomotive is detected to be moving or stopping (such as chuffing, coasting and braking sounds).  

*Some manufacturers may issue a warning that they do not recommend a DCC fitted locomotive to be operated on a DC (analog) layout, and may void any warranties. Check your locomotive's manual for more information. Not all sound decoders enable sound playback on DC operation, and this information is provided with your decoder manual.
