PROTOTYPE HISTORY:

For years railroads have hauled ethyl alcohol, or ethanol as it is better known. Ethanol is made mostly from corn and is used as an additive to oxygenate gasoline thus reducing pollution. It is also being used in a mostly raw form as an alternative to gasoine. Most of this usage is in the Midwest states like Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Indiana where there is a plentiful supply of corn.

In 2004 it was mandated by the federal government that ethanol be used to replace MBTE as an additive to oxygenate all gasoline in the state of California. Since California is not a corn producing state the ethanol has to be shipped in from states with large corn crops and ethanol plants. This ethanol traffic boomed in 2004 as several million gallons were needed by refineries in the Los Angeles harbor area alone, with an additional 800 million gallons needed in the entire state.

To meet growing demand for new tank cars, UTLX Manufacturing has been expanding production capacity with a manufacturing facility in Alexandria, Louisiana. UTLX #205400 is the first car in the initial run from the new plant. The 30,000-gallon car is sized to stage the greatest number of cars at the producer's loading rack and still meet the 263,000-pound gross rail load limit. The Funnel-Flow(R) design facilitates complete bottom unloading.

Modern ethanol tank cars have a 30,000-gallon capacity. Most tank cars are owned by railcar leasing companies. Many are leased to the ethanol producing companies and carry their company logos. Fuel dealers, small refineries and other industries receive single cars and small blocks of cars that are mixed into freight trains. Large gasoline refineries may receive 100-car unit trains several times per week.

DC ANALOG SYSTEMS
DC Analog is a control system standard to most starter sets which allows the user to control the track (and not the locomotive). This means that two or more trains on the same track will move, speed up, slow down and stop at the same time.
DCC DIGTIAL SYSTEMS
DCC Digital stands for ‘Digital Command Control’. DCC Digital systems allow individual locomotives and accessories to be independently controlled from the controller. Other functions, such as lighting and sound (if equipped), can also be independently controlled.

DCC READY (Standard DC)

This means the locomotive, train set or equipment is fitted with a socket that is ready to accept a DCC decoder.  The most common and readily available types of decoders here in the US are: 6 pin, 8 pin, next 18, and 21 pin.  Prior to buying a  decoder for your locomotive, verify which of the previous you will need.  This information is usually found on the manufacturers site or instruction booklet.

The locomotive requires a DCC decoder to be fitted to the socket in order for it to work on a DCC controlled layout. It can however still be used on the conventional DC (analog) layout.

DCC EQUIPPED

This indicates that the locomotive, train set or equipment is fitted with a decoder that has been pre-installed at the factory.

This means that the locomotive is ready to run and operate on a DCC controlled layout and can now be called up by request from a Digital Controller. Additional features, such as lighting and sound (if equipped), can also be independently controlled (only if the locomotive is fitted with these accessories).

Some DCC equipped locomotives can also be run on DC layouts (see note below). Some accessories may continue to work automatically, such as lighting and sound (if equipped), however, the user will not have independent control of these under DC operation. It is important to note that manufacturer's decoders who support sound playback on DC operation will only provide a selection of sounds when the locomotive is detected to be moving or stopping (such as chuffing, coasting and braking sounds).

*Some manufacturers may issue a warning that they do not recommend a DCC fitted locomotive to be operated on a DC (analog) layout, and may void any warranties. Check your locomotive's manual for more information. Not all sound decoders enable sound playback on DC operation, and this information is provided with your decoder manual.
